[0001] The present invention relates to equipment for controlling models and accessories in the field of model railways.
[0002] In the practice of model railways, digital plastic management technology is increasingly widespread. This technology consists of the presence of one or more buses, which can be of various types and respond to different protocols.
[0003] The digital command protocols are divided into several types:<tb> a) <SEP> addressing and command of accessories such as exchanges, railway signals, level crossings, building lighting and any other function belonging to devices located on the model<tb> b) <SEP> train running data collection<tb> c) <SEP> detection of the status of the accessories<tb> d) <SEP> train running command.

[0005] Lately, the construction of modular models has become very popular, in which several people build a part of the model railroad, and at public or private events or meetings these parts are united to create a single path.
In these situations, the arrangement of the accessories is obviously variable (especially as regards the signals), and the need to simplify the electronic connections becomes important.
[0007] All the systems mentioned are based on a fairly similar structure, in which each electronic device interfaces on the one hand with a digital control unit or a computer, to exchange information or receive commands, and on the other with the devices on the plastic, to operate accessories or obtain data from sensors positioned on the track.
[0008] The invention proposed here consists of a modular system which, compared to the systems currently in use, unifies, simplifies and makes the management of the digital accessories present on the railway models and the communication between the sensors and the control unit more economical.
[0009] The idea is based on the separation between the communication function with the control unit and the interface with the devices on the model in two different modules, managed by a motherboard that contains the device control electronics (figure 1).
[0010] The proposed device therefore consists of the connection of at least three modules, of which a motherboard (figure 2), one or more modules that interface on the model, hereafter called "layout" (figure 3), and one or more modules that interface with the control unit, hereinafter called "net" (figure 4), connected together to form a unit that has the function of controlling and / or managing trains or accessories (figure 1).
[0011] The connections are made by the user with simplicity. The "net" type modules select the communication protocol with the digital control unit, while the "layout" type modules select the type of accessory with which to interface.
[0012] The motherboard can automatically recognize the modules installed on it and can activate the corresponding functions. It is possible to install various types of modules, so as to have different functions or identical functions simultaneously according to the need (figure 5)
[0013] This allows the user to minimize costs and increase efficiency in the configuration of the device, compared to the systems currently in use.

Claims (10)

1. A modular device for the control of digital accessories and sensors on the railway model (1), characterized by three types of modules with distinct logical functions:a) one or more modules (4) that communicate with the digital control unit or PC (5),b) one or more modules (2) that interface with accessories and sensors on the model (8, 9, 10),c) a motherboard (3) on which the control electronics and management software for the a) and b) modules indicated here are installed.

Modules according to claim 1 characterized in that they are physically constituted on independent electronic boards (2, 4) and installed directly on the motherboard (3) through connectors or connected to it by cables.

Modules according to claim 1 characterized in that they can be integrated in whole or in part with each other, inside larger electronic boards, and not necessarily be divided between three distinct types of boards. The logical function of the aforementioned cards must however be clearly identifiable and attributable to the functions indicated as a, b, c in claim 1.

The connectors between the motherboard and the modules (6) are characterized by the transmission, in whole or in part, of the following electrical signals: power supply for the logic circuits, power supply for model-making accessories, data bus from the digital control unit or computer, logical communication signals between the modules.

5. A motherboard (3) as described in claim 1 is characterized by the existence of connectors (6) to accept at least one module for each of the indicated types (2, 4).

A motherboard (3) as described in claim 1 is characterized by the possibility of accepting multiple modules of the same type, having the same function or different functions. For example, the same motherboard can accept several different modules of type b) (11, 12, 13) dedicated to different types of accessories (8, 9, 10), managing them all simultaneously.

7. Motherboard (3) characterized by the power supply coming from the outside (7), through direct, alternating current, or via digital data bus. Power is supplied by the digital control panel (5) or by other external power supply devices.

Modules of type a) or b) as indicated in claim 1 (2, 4) characterized by data bus and module power supply coming directly from the motherboard through connection connectors.

9. Modules of type a) or b) as indicated in claim 1 (2, 4) characterized by data bus and power supply independent from the motherboard.

10. The motherboard according to claim 1 is characterized in that it automatically recognizes the modules (2, 4) installed on it at the moment of power-on, and can activate the corresponding functions.
